Warehouse Inspection Checklist

The following are some important points that will help to prepare warehouse inspection checklist:

1- LAYOUT 

  • Area is tidy and well house kept. 
  • Appropriate storage space is available/provided. 
  • Floor is free of obstructions/hurdles and not-slippery.
  • Any opening in the floor is safeguarded or covered. 
  • Aisles are enough wide for vehicular traffic and clearly marking is done. 
  • Walkways clearly marked and guarded if necessary. 

2- ENVIRONMENTS 

  • Lighting is adequate and enough. 
  • Lighting covers and fittings are secure. 
  • Noise level is acceptable/adequately controlled.
  • Ventilation is adequate. 
  • Where a gas heater is installed, is the permanent ventilation system provided?
  • Does the heater have automatic safety cut off?

3- EMERGENCY PROCEDURES 

  • Written procedures posted. 
  • Fire Extinguishers of easily accessible and kept clear.
  • Tag on extinguishers have been checked in the last 6 months.
  • Visitor Emergency Guides are available (where required).
  • Fire Alarm (FA) can be heard throughout the warehouse. 
  • Escape routes are clear and marked.
  • Emergency and hazard signage is clearly visible.
  • Evacuation drills carried out.

4- FIRST AID FACILITIES 

  • Kits accessible within 5 minutes. 
  • Kits are stocked and contents are in-date. 
  • Names and contacts of first aiders displayed. 

5- GENERAL FACILITIES 

  • Washing facilities are clean and functional. 
  • Lockers or equivalent available for staff. 
  • Eating areas clean, hygienic and adequately serviced. 
  • EHS posters and information is displayed. 

6- MANUAL HANDLING AND ERGONOMICS

  • Regularly used items are within easy access between knee and shoulder.
  • Heavy items stored at waist height. 
  • Portable Platforms such as scaffold and ladders are available to access items/objects stored on higher shelves.
  • Trolleys are available for heavy items and loads.
  • Stored items adequately secured and stable.
  • Are cutting tools, cutting surfaces, devices, machinery and guillotines appropriately safeguarded.

7- ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES 

  • Recycling posters and information displayed. 
  • Paper, Toner and Commingle recycling bins are provided.
  • Informative/precautionary notice to encourage double sided photocopying and printing is displayed.

8- ELECTRICAL SAFETY 

  • Portable equipment has current test tags. 
  • Power leads in good condition. 
  • Power leads/cords/wires/installations are off the floor or placed away from walkways.
  • Power boards used (not double adaptors). 
  • Faulty equipment is tagged out. 

9- GENERAL WAREHOUSES 

  • Warning and safety signage in good condition
  • Procedure, plant and equipment manuals are updated and easily available.
  • Warehouse free of food and drink. 
  • Is shelving structure/installation secured correctly and in safe condition?
  • Are shelving load weights management done accurately and known and followed properly?
  • Portable Loading Ramps (PLR) can be secured and can safely support loads.
  • Loading Dock Edges (LDE’s) are clearly marked and Safeguarded.
  • Loading Dock Gates (LDG’s) are closed when not in use.

10- CHEMICAL ASPECTS 

  • Chemical Inventory and MSDS available. 
  • Spill kits are available and maintained. 
  • Containers are labelled appropriately with chemical name and Class diamonds.
  • All types of chemicals and or substances are stored safely, correctly, bunded and segregated from all drains.
  • Gas cylinders stored securely. 
  • Chemicals labelled. 
  • Hazchem and other signs adequate. 
  • Ready access to eyewashes and emergency showers. 

11- PLANT AND EQUIPMENT 

  • Area around plant clean. 
  • Access to plant is clear. 
  • Safe working instructions displayed close to plant.
  • Plant, equipment or machinery maintained properly and in good condition.
  • Emergency stops are working. 
  • Plant guarding in place. 
  • No sharp edges protruding into aisles or walkways. 
  • Seating appropriate and in good condition. 

12- FORKLIFTS AND OTHER TRANSPORTS

  • Forklift operators are trained and when required registered.
  • Forklift operators are maintained and checked regularly.
  • Staff are trained in basic forklift maintenance: recharging or fueling.
  • Adequately refurbished recharging/refueling stations provided?
  • Is forklift safety equipment/vehicle/machinery used reliably? 
  • Where gas/petrol powered forklift are used, is the ventilation adequate?

13- WASTE DISPOSALS 

  • Waste containers are provided and labelled with Class Diamonds where relevant and required.
  • Waste of all types is segregated and stored accordingly/properly away from drains.
  • Spill kits are available. 

14- PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT 

  • Correctly stored. 
  • Well maintained and in good condition. 
  • Signage of PPE requirements displayed. 
  • Required PPE available.
