Office Health and Safety Checklist

PRIMITIVE LIFE SAFETY

  • Are exit signs illuminated and visible?
  • Are corridors and exits free from obstructions and unlocked?
  • Access to exit doesn’t need travel through extremely high hazard area?
  • Stairways are in good repair with handrails and non-slip tread?
  • Stairways are not being used for storage?
  • Stairway steps are uniform in size?
  • Is the (ERP Plans) Emergency Evacuation Route & Action Plan posted at various designated location at worksite?
  • Are all emergency exit doors closed and not propped open?
  • Is there no obvious damage to sprinklers?
  • Are all extinguishing media, e.g. fire extinguishers easily accessible, monthly inspection, and operational?
  • Are fire extinguishers installed so that the travel distance from employees to any extinguisher installed point is 75 feet or less? 

GENERIC OFFICE SAFETY

  • Are corridors, aisles, doorways and corners are secure & safe and free of obstructions to avoid slips & trips and fall incidents. 
  • Lighting in work areas and walkways adequate? 
  • Are chairs in a safe condition and are a caster, rungs and legs sturdy?
  • Are all equipment & tools and supply materials and items are in their right places?
  • Is there adequate walking and egress clearance?
  1. 44” for corridors and stairways.
  2. 36” for aisles.
  3. 32” for doors.
  • Are carts, dollies, etc. available for use in transporting heavy objects and boxes?
  • Is housekeeping being adequately maintained?
  • Is SDS available for office and housekeeping chemicals? 
  • Are OSHA posters prominently displayed?

SLIP TRIP OR FALL HAZARDS

  • Is the floor surface level and undamaged?
  • The floor is not wet or slippery?
  • A warning sign is available in case of spills?
  • Cleanup supplies are readily available?
  • Non-slip mats are in entryways if needed?
  • Are carpeted areas clean, carpets secured to the floor and free of worn or frayed seams?
  • Is any equipment or supplies protruding into walkways?
  • Are there cords or trailing cables causing a trip hazard?
  • Are permanent usable electrical cords covered by runners when crossing walkways?
  • Is a step stool or ladder available to minimize the use of chairs for reaching high objects?

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

  • Are GFCI outlets within 6 feet of a water source?
  • Is there any access problem to electrical rooms in case of emergency or normal MEP circumstances?
  • Are outlets overloaded?
  • Extension cords are not used instead of fixed wiring?
  • A maximum of one power strip per electrical holder/box is used? (no daisy chains)
  • All electrical cords, extensions and plugs are in good and safe condition? (i.e., not frayed, taped, spliced, or missing ground prongs)
  • Electrical receptacles are in good working condition?
  • All electrical equipment in good working condition?
  • Are electrical closets free of storage?
  • Are personal appliances & devices such as space heaters or coffee maker’s compliance with the buildings Electrical Circuit System (ECS)?
  • Are space heaters furnished with a multi-directional tip-over switch?
  • Are space heaters equipped with extra safety warning sensors (an overheat sensor)? 

MEP SERVICES (External & internal)

  • Are doors and locks in good working order?
  • Are ceiling tiles intact, undamaged and in place?
  • Are there no signs of extreme weather damage or presence or growth of mold in the facility?
  • Are all windows unbroken and free from any type of damage?
  • Do air conditioning vents and ducts (Package units) appear to be tidy upon visual inspection?
  • Are outside lights in good working order?
  • Does the exterior of the office or facility building present no safety hazards?
  • Is the parking lot area free from safety hazards? (i.e. overgrown landscaping, uneven pavement, traffic hazards)
